Summary
In the exposition of Space Between the Stars by Deborah Santana it gives an introduction to the beginning phase of her life growing up and how she begins to change over time. In the exposition the setting of the story is in San Francisco where she lived in a mixed racial household; mom was white and father was African American and her sister who is very close to her almost like a best friend was a combination of both of parents. Deborah the main character faces conflict with other people in the first few chapters in the novel. In society during that period of time blacks and whites were segregated in the south so her parents moved so they could legalize their marriage. When Deborah would go off to school people would notice her skin color and her racial background and begin to tease her upon those characterizations. After being teased she never seen her family as one but more to where everyone was labeled as either black or white. As Deborah got older she became more involved in boys; her father being a musician and very protective was not so fond of the dating scene. This part of the novel in Space Between the Stars by Deborah Santana was the start of the complications. With Deborah beginning to become older and more independent her actions of dating began to worry her family just to a certain extent because they seen her as their innocent daughter who was to follow Gods plans.

Reaction
Reading the quote is like a small summary of how Deborahs' life may turn out to be.The way she describes how she feels safe within the tunes is like she is saying music or musicans are her way of feeling safe because of the lyrics they give off through their music. Also Deborahs' style of writing is in first person where you can visualize everything that she does and what she goes through. She is telling a story but not just any story this story is written to show her innocence as a young teen and how she starts to be manipulated by the music; the olny thing she felt safe within. The manipulation of the music which starts to turn her life upside down is one thing that is hard for her to say no to.
