Space Between the Stars (pg.65-132)

Summary
In the novel Space Between the Stars by Deborah Santana the exposition begins to climb into the conflict stage in Deborah's life. When Deborah begins to date men she wants to be careful about the many decisions she knows that she will have to make. One day while walking home Deborah is stopped by a famous musician by the name of Sly Stone. Many people understand the baggage that most musicians bring with them; which was one thing Deborah's' father tried to explain to her, so she had to be careful. When Deborah beings to be mislead by his kindness and charm she starts to realize that the things he do to himself and other people are the exact things she was trying to avoid when getting involved in a relationship, which she too blinded by. Deborah's desire was to get Sly to love her the way she loved him but the more she tried the more she was being used to his personal extent. With Deborah believing that she was in loved she left college, her family, and friends just so she could feel as if she was being loved and this man cared so much about her. The love she shown him was very close and deep to her because she gave up her purity and he only loved her because she did the things he asked her which involved drugs, sex, and giving up her entire goals in life. This point in the novel is a major obstacle because it takes Deborah multiple times to try and leave the one she loves. When she finally leaves Sly she gives herself back to God. With her devotion to the Lord she begins to get her life back on track and remind her self day by day that she is stronger than what she was in the past when she was with Sly. Deborah later gets a stable job before going back to school working as a receptionist in the music industry during the summer. Throughout the summer she soon finds her self being in strong like with a musician by the name of Carlos Santana; not thinking about dating she reminds her self once more that she can not get herself involved in another misleading relationship. Deborah is trying to find her self and she is trying her best to not get into a relationship that tells her who she is instead of her finding her own definition of her true colors.

Quote

Space Between the Stars
He said, "Come do this."
I said yes.
He said, "Come do that"
I said yes.
He said, "Give me your youth,
your innocence,
your precious time.
In return, I'll give you things,
I'm nice,
I'm a sheep-see my wool."
Now the priceless gifts I gave
are gone.
The things he gave are dung.
Now I see
I should say NO
to wolves in sheep's clothing

Love, mom

(Santana 97).

Reaction
In this quote the author gives a poem to the reader. This poem was written to the author by her mother when she was in the midst of ruining herself. This poem is written in the style of senceirness due to the fact Deborah's mom cared for Deborah's actions when she met Sly and how she let him run her life. This poem is a hint to life which is hidden within the words. The words explain the wool of sheep being soft and that gives and impression of kindness. Sly is the one deceiving himself as the sheep wool but at the same time he is just tricking Deborah in order to get what he wants from her. In the beginning of the novel Deborah was an innocent girl who did not know much about the world of horror which involved sex and drugs. Deborah gave up herself to this man who cared nothing about her but just to have her because he seen beauty and this young girl who can being misguided because of the nice expensive things he can give and the small attention to make her think he cared. I feel like the poem is very nice and strong. Since Deborah can't hear what her family is telling her about this man they describe it for her. As she reads the poem she realizes that it is about her and she is no longer herself because all the things she had done jus to be with this man. This poem is a lesson that all girls should learn to think about because being deceived by a man is something that we as girls and young ladies will want to rethink because when the important things we do not notice are gone we will regret that we ever let someone take total control of our precious temples.
